Integrating Megaport with SAP on Google Cloud

You can create a network connection from your physical Port to your SAP environment on Google with Virtual Cross Connects (VXCs) and Google Partner Interconnect. You can also use Partner Interconnect to connect to a cloud-only instance of SAP on Google. 

If you already have a physical Port, you can add a new VXC to your SAP on Google instance through the Megaport Portal. We recommend that you create a new Port if you meet either of the following criteria:

  • You want to physically separate this solution from your other existing traffic traversing your Ports.
  • You require the new Port to be in a different location from the existing Port.

If you aren’t a Megaport customer, you can create a 1 Gbps, 10 Gbps, or 100 Gbps Port in one of our global data centers/Points of Presence. If your company isn’t located in one of our PoPs, you can procure a last mile circuit to one of the sites to connect to Megaport. Contact Megaport for more information.

SAP on Google Cloud

SAP on Google Cloud can be deployed in any existing Google region. This high-level diagram shows an SAP Business One solution on Google Cloud with the incorporation of Megaport Partner Interconnect Layer 2 services. 

Google Architecture

You can achieve redundancy for the connectivity portion of this solution by establishing additional VXCs to the Google environment. You can achieve additional physical redundancy if the VXCs are implemented on separate Ports. In addition, you can establish an internet VPN for redundancy. 

Before you begin

When planning SAP deployments on Google Cloud, you will need to consider:

  • Supported database options
  • Supported operating systems
  • Certified VM types for the particular SAP service plan 

Hardware sizing documentation and tools such as Quick Sizer can help you determine the required hardware to support your implementation of SAP on Google.

Connecting Megaport to SAP on Google Cloud

To integrate Megaport with SAP on Google Cloud, you will perform the following tasks:

  1. Create pairing keys in the Google Cloud console.
  2. Deploy a VXC in the Megaport Portal to the Google Cloud Platform.
  3. Activate the VLAN attachment in Google Cloud console.
  4. Configure the BGP in the Google Cloud console.

To create pairing keys

  1. Log on to your Google Cloud Console. 
  2. From the main menu, choose Hybrid Connectivity > Interconnect.  Interconnect
  3. Click Get Started.
  4. Select Partner Interconnect and click Continue.
  5. Click I already have a service provider.

  6. Configure your attachment.
    Provide the following details:

    • Redundancy – You can create redundant attachments or a single attachment:
      • Create a redundant pair of VLAN attachments (default option) – If you set up two VLAN attachments into your Google Cloud infrastructure, you will qualify for Google’s 99.9% SLA. 
      • Create a single VLAN – Set up a non-redundant single BGP session (this attachment does not qualify for the Google SLA). 
      • Add a redundant VLAN to an existing VLAN – If you previously created a single VLAN, you can make it redundant by selecting this option. 
    • VPC Network – Select the VPC network you want your VPC to connect to.
    • Region – Select the region where your attachment will connect.
    • Cloud Router – A Cloud Router to associate with this attachment. You can only choose a Cloud Router in the VPC network and region that you selected with an ASN of 16550. If you don’t have an existing Cloud Router, create one with an ASN of 16550. For redundancy, each VLAN attachment must be associated with a unique Cloud Router. Google automatically adds an interface and a BGP peer on the Cloud Router.
    • VLAN attachment name – Specify a name for the first VLAN. Lowercase letters only.
    • Description – An optional field.

  7. Click Create.

    A pairing key appears.

  8. Copy the two pairing keys and click OK.

The next task is to create a VXC to your Google peering location from the Megaport Portal.

To deploy a VXC to the Google Cloud Platform

  1. In the Megaport Portal, click +Connection on the Port for your VXC.
    If you haven’t already created a Port, see Creating a Port.

  2. Add a Google Cloud connection for the Port.
    If this is the first connection for the Port, click the Google Cloud tile. The tile is a shortcut to the configuration page. Alternatively, click +Connection, click Cloud, and click Google as the provider.

  3. Copy and paste the pairing key from the Google Cloud console into the field in the right-hand panel.
    The relevant Google targets appear based on the region of your GCI Partner connection. Select Port Key

  4. Click Next.
    After verifying the key, a Valid Service Key notification appears. 

  5. Select your chosen target location for your first connection and click Next.
    You can use the Country filter to narrow the selection.

  6. Specify the connection details:

    • Connection Name – The name of your VXC to be shown in the Megaport Portal.

    • Service Level Reference (optional) – Specify a unique identifying number for the VXC to be used for billing purposes, such as a cost center number or a unique customer ID. The service level reference number appears for each service under the Product section of the invoice. You can also edit this field for an existing service.

      Note

      Partner-managed accounts can apply a Partner Deal to a service. For more information, see Associating a Deal With a Service.

    • Rate Limit – The speed of your VXC connection in Mbps. The speed cannot be changed once deployed. The drop-down list shows predefined rate limits available for your Port, up to 10 Gbps.  

    • VXC State – Select Enabled or Shut Down to define the initial state of the connection. For more information, see Shutting Down a VXC for Failover Testing.

      Note

      If you select Shut Down, traffic will not flow through this service and it will behave as if it was down on the Megaport network. Billing for this service will remain active and you will still be charged for this connection.

    • Preferred A-End VLAN (optional) – Specify an unused VLAN ID for your on-premise router configuration.
      This must be a unique VLAN ID on this Port and can range from 2 to 4093. If you specify a VLAN ID that is already in use, Megaport will assign the next closest available value.

    • Minimum Term – Select No Minimum Term, 12 Months, 24 Months, or 36 Months. Longer terms result in a lower monthly rate. 12 Months is selected by default.
      Take note of the information on the screen to avoid early termination fees (ETF). See VXC Pricing and Contract Terms and VXC, Megaport Internet, and IX Billing for more information.

    Add Connection

  7. Click Next.
    A summary page appears that includes the monthly cost.

  8. Click Back to make changes or click Add VXC to move this configuration to your cart.

  9. Configure an additional VXC for redundancy using the second Google pairing key.

  10. Click Order at the top-left of the screen and complete the ordering process to deploy the VXC.

    Megaport will deploy the VXC connection, which can take several minutes.

The Layer 2 VXC deployment is complete. The next task is to return to your Google Cloud Console to complete the BGP configuration for the VXCs/VLANs.

To activate the BGP configuration in Google Cloud

  1. Log on to your Google Cloud Console.
  2. From the main menu, choose Hybrid Connectivity > Interconnect. 
  3. Click Activate next to the new attachment. Activate Attachment
  4. In the Activate your Partner VLAN attachment window, click Accept.
  5. Click Configure BGP to complete the process. Configure BGP

  6. Repeat these steps to activate and configure the BGP session on your second VLAN attachment. 

    The BGP configuration is complete. 

Background Information

What is SAP on Google Cloud?

SAP on Google is an Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) that allows customers to have an SAP service on the Google Cloud platform. Using SAP on Google allows for backup and disaster recovery, global system monitoring, simple to use configuration and automation tools, identity management, and a range of security tools. 

Key terms and acronyms:

  • Partner Interconnect – Google’s Layer 2 service that allows for private connectivity from a Partner Interconnect partner like Megaport into the Google Cloud platform.
  • Virtual Cross Connect (VXC) – Virtual Cross Connect is the Megaport product name for a Layer 2 VLAN.
